On Monday, famed physicist Stephen Hawking and Russian tycoon Yuri Milner held a news conference in London to announce their new project: injecting $100 million and a whole lot of brain power into the search for intelligent extraterrestrial life, an endeavor they’re calling Breakthrough Listen.” ~ BBC News
“We believe that life arose spontaneously on Earth,” Hawking said at Monday’s news conference, “So in an infinite universe, there must be other occurrences of life.”
Just check in with the CIA, Mr. Hawking—they allegedly have some pictures to show you—although I’m not sure how good they are at sharing.
Yuri Milner, who is known for his investments in Facebook and Alibaba, will be footing the entire bill.
In the official project video, Mr. Hawking and a team of scientists explain how the project “Breakthrough Initiatives” can be supported by citizen science and social media to spread the message around the globe. The targeted area of the search will be the Milky Way and one million stars and galaxies.
